 Launch of AMCHAM T&T's 28th Annual HSSE Conference & Exhibition

LINKAGE Q3 (2024) - OPPORTUNITY IN ADVERSITY  

 T his year’s Health, Safety, Security and Environment  (HSSE) Conference & Exhibition will  address the critical topic of Human Factors in HSE - the official Theme for AMCHAM T&T’s 28th Annual HSSE Conference scheduled for November 11th and November 12th, 2024 at the Hyatt Regency. 


In recent years, the Caribbean’s leading HSSE Conference has increasingly emphasized the human aspect of fostering a robust HSSE culture. This focus aims to enhance understanding of the causes of workplace accidents and failures. 


Stuart Franco, President of AMCHAM T&T, stated at the conference launch, “It's not about blame or enforcing more rigid rules. And, it’s not about seeing people as the problem but recognizing that people (your people) are the solution.”


Franco stressed the importance of empowering employees to adhere to guidelines, exercise caution, and voice concerns when things go awry. The goal is to learn from mistakes and approach safety with a mindset of improvement.

“We must have a clear understanding of the human factors in HSE. Essentially, this refers to the environmental, organizational, and job factors, as well as human and individual characteristics which influence behavior at work in a way that can affect health and safety,” Franco said. “When we better understand these factors, we create a safer and more efficient work environment for everyone!”


Franco said the theme of Human Factors is very important because it is at the heart of improving safety. “By taking the time to understand and address the root causes of human error carefully, we can design better systems, processes, and environments to minimize the likelihood of accidents and incidents,” Franco said. “In other words, addressing Human Factors can save lives and enhance the overall safety performance of every organization.”


The theme will also look at how leaders address and learn from errors to send a powerful message that will reverberate throughout the entire workplace.  Franco says this speaks to ensuring psychological safety to create a positive and productive work environment to ensure employees feel safe to take calculated risks, voice their opinions, and learn from their mistakes. It all comes down to leadership and how leaders respond to failure or mistakes.


CYBERSECURITY TRACK
A parallel Cybersecurity Track will delve into “Human Factors in Cybersecurity.” This segment will examine the psychological, social, and cognitive dimensions of human behavior in the digital age.


Expert speakers will present the latest research and innovations in human-centered cybersecurity, covering effective phishing prevention strategies, incident response, and threat hunting. Real-world case studies and best practices will demonstrate how to integrate human factors into an organization’s cybersecurity strategy for a more comprehensive approach to safeguarding digital assets. 


“It goes without saying but let’s never forget that understanding the impact of cyber security and securing a cyber-resilient business future will be absolutely crucial to our business survival in both todays and tomorrow’s world,” Franco said.
