Accelerating Action:
The Role of Men in Advancing Gender Equality

by Stuart Franco - President of AMCHAM T&T

LINKAGE Q1 (2025) - ACCELERATE ACTION

Gender equality isn’t just a women’s issue, it’s a shared responsibility. Men, especially those in leadership, have a crucial role to play in creating workplaces where women can thrive, lead, and succeed.

At AMCHAM T&T, we know that real change requires action, not just words. Male leaders have the power to challenge outdated norms and champion gender equity in meaningful ways. The question isn’t whether men should be involved – it’s how we can be better allies in this movement.

Being an ally is a first major step, but it's more than just supporting gender equality in principle. It’s about consistent, intentional actions that promote fairness and level the playing field. I will be the first to admit that I don’t always get it right. But what matters is my willingness to learn and take corrective action.

Here's what I found has worked for me:
· Recognise and challenge bias. Unconscious biases affect decisions and leadership opportunities. We must question outdated norms and ensure merit—not gender—defines success.
· Speak up and advocate. Support women in meetings and call out discrimination or exclusion when it happens. Silence enables inequality.
· Open doors and create opportunities. Women don’t need men to "give" them a seat at the table—they need leaders who actively remove barriers to equitable access. We must be intentional in championing women’s advancement.

M ale leaders must help create workplaces where gender equity isn’t just a goal, but where it’s embedded in company culture. Ensure transparency in hiring, promotions, and salaries. Establish zero-tolerance policies against harassment, discrimination, and gender-based violence. Advocate for family-friendly policies like flexible work arrangements and parental leave for both men and women to champion a healthy work-life balance.

Remember, gender equality isn’t just the right thing to do; it benefits everyone. Inclusive workplaces are good for business. But progress won’t happen unless men step up as supporters and as active participants in dismantling systemic barriers.
At AMCHAM T&T, we challenge male leaders to go beyond the conversation. It’s time to lead the change.

Are we ready to accelerate action together?
