General Questions about Trinidad and Tobago

Trinidad and Tobago enjoys a maritime tropical climate which is influenced by the northeast trade winds. In Trinidad the annual mean temperature is 26°C, and the average maximum temperature is 33°C. Tobago’s temperature tends to be slightly cooler.

There are two predominant seasons; the dry season which begins in January and ends in May, and the rainy/wet season from June to December.

Both Trinidad and Tobago are located below the hurricane belt and the islands normally experience less storm activity than some of the other Caribbean islands.

Port of Spain is the capital of Trinidad. It is the hub of the island both culturally and economically and boasts a wide variety of entertainment, night life, restaurants and hotels.

Scarborough is the capital of Tobago and offers travellers restaurants beaches and hotels.

The various airlines operating routes in and out of Trinidad from Latin America are AEROPOSTAL which leaves from Caracas and COPA from Panama.

Airlines operating from the United States include CONTINENTAL which leaves from Houston and Newark/New Jersey; DELTA AIRLINES functions from Atlanta and New York; CARIBBEAN AIRLINES which flies from Miami and New York; AMERICAN AIRLINES INC which also leaves from Miami and AMERICAN EAGLE INC from San Juan.

INSEL AIR INTERNATIONAL is available for participants leaving from Curacao.

You will need a valid passport for three months longer than your stay and a return ticket.

Visa requirements are compulsory for Bolivia, Paraguay and Haiti. All other AACCLA member countries do not require visas. Visa Waivers are available and participants from the above stated countries can contact us at bfa_communications@amchamtt.mx.com to arrange same.

The departure tax is US$16.00.

The unit of currency is the Trinidad and Tobago, or TT Dollar (TTD). Trinidad and Tobago notes are issued in denominations of TT$ 1.00, 5.00, 10.00, 20.00, 100.00. Some businesses accept the USD.

Visa and Master cards are more widely accepted than American Express and other credit cards.

ATMs accepting cards on the Plus/Electron and Cirrus/Maestro networks are also available and can be found at the Piarco International Airport in Trinidad and the Crown Point International Airport in Tobago or within Port of Spain or Scarborough. Travellers cheques are also accepted and can be changed in most banks.

The banks most commonly used are Citi, First Citizens Bank, Intercommercial Bank, Republic Bank, RBTT, Scotiabank.

If you are visiting Trinidad and Tobago on business, suits, shirts, ties, blazers and jackets are appropriate. However one should also pack, comfortable, light cotton clothing, sunscreen, sunglasses and insect repellent. Please note that it is illegal in Trinidad and Tobago for civilians to wear camouflage clothing.

Even though this is entirely dependent on your discretion, the following guidelines can be used.

  • Taxi Drivers: 10% of the fare
  • Service Staff at a Restaurant: 10 to 15 % of total bill
  • Spa Attendants: 10% of total bill

Banks open Monday to Thursday from 8:00AM to 2:00PM. On Fridays they open at 8:00AM to 12 noon and then reopen from 3:00PM to 5:00PM. Banks located in shopping plazas are the exception to this rule with business hours from 10:00 AM to 6:00PM. Most shops open from 8:00AM to 5:00PM. Those located in shopping malls open from 10:00AM to 7:00PM. Shops, Malls and Banks are normally closed on Sundays and Public Holidays.

It is important to note that in some cases the monthly calendar may change unavoidably, so it is advised to contact the Secretariat at the earliest convenience to confirm events and your attendance.
