The American Chamber of Commerce of Trinidad and Tobago (AMCHAM T&T) welcomes the announcement that some products from Trinidad and Tobago will be subject to a 10% U.S. tariff rate, rather than the previously imposed 15%, along with the exemption of key petrochemical exports from the latest U.S. trade measures. These developments represent a positive outcome for Trinidad and Tobago's export sector and broader economy.
Under the decision announced by the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), Trinidad and Tobago will now be subject to a 10% tariff – the lowest rate applied under the review – rather than the previously proposed rate of up to 12.5%. The announcement also confirmed the removal of tariffs on several petrochemical products, providing further relief for one of Trinidad and Tobago's most important export sectors.
In addition to the sustained work of the GORTT, in June of this year, AMCHAM T&T CEO Nirad Tewarie discussed the issue of petrochemical tariffs with US Department of Agriculture Under Secretary Luke J Lindberg, who promised to review the matter.
The United States remains Trinidad and Tobago's largest trading partner, making this outcome particularly significant for the country's exporters, manufacturers, energy producers, and the wider economy.
