PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
SUSTAINABILITY -
FROM INTENTION TO IMPACT
By Anna Henderson

Today, I want to talk to you about a topic I know many of you are familiar with, and hopefully already practicing: Sustainability. While the word has become part of our everyday vocabulary, sustainability is now an urgent necessity—one that must move from conversation to concrete action from everyone.
We are living through a period of profound transition. Social, environmental, and economic shifts are reshaping every aspect of our lives. Both public and private sector leadership must align not just around intent, but around impact. That’s why our ESG Conference theme this year, “Sustainability: From Intention to Impact,” resonates so deeply. Good intentions are not enough. Making a plan, measuring progress and building accountable systems are the real benchmarks of sustainable growth.
In the private sector, sustainability means rethinking how we define success. It’s about embedding ESG into strategy—measuring what matters, whether that’s environmental conservation, gender equity, supply chain integrity, or governance practices. Businesses have to go beyond CSR to develop business models that uplift people and planet with the same significance as driving financial gains.
In the public sector, we must match ambition with action. This means creating enabling environments through effective legislation, efficient institutions, and inclusive policies. We must adopt a national ESG roadmap that unifies our commitments—from climate adaptation to social equity and institutional reform—into one coherent strategy that goes beyond international rankings and strives to improve the lives of everyone in our country.
Sustainability is about people: empowering youth, engaging civil society, and ensuring that every voice, especially those historically excluded, is heard and valued.
And yes, this is also about leadership. At every level. We need boards and ministries, teachers and CEOs, to champion this cause and model the behaviours that will define a better future.
At AMCHAM T&T, we stand ready to support this shift. We are committed to convening, training, advocating, and—most importantly—acting.
So, as you continue to navigate these periods of transition and enjoy the articles curated for you in this issue of LINKAGE, I invite you to reflect on this question: How are you turning your intentions into impact? And more importantly: How can we support you in doing so?
Consider the statement by Howard Zinn, American historian, playwright, philosopher, socialist thinker and World War II veteran: “We don’t have to engage in grand, heroic actions to participate in change. Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world.”
Let’s transform Trinidad and Tobago to be more sustainable—together.
