Lou Lyons
Musical Director | Freetown Collective
Behind the moniker “CheahMeng” is Lou Lyons, rhythm guitarist, lead vocalist, composer, and arranger in the band Freetown Collective from the West Indian twin-island state of Trinidad and Tobago. Along with co-founder and fellow lead vocalist Muhammad Muwakil, Lyons set out to impact the local music scene of Trinidad in 2010 after having practiced Law (Constitutional and Labour Law), lectured in the study of law at several tertiary-level institutions, and achieved popularity as a spoken word artist with Pan-African and Rastafarian philosophy.
Hailing from Tobago, the smaller of both islands, Lyons got his introduction to music from his early involvement in church and school choirs. However, it was his home environment that instilled within him a profound respect for black music.
The socio-political themes appearing in Lyons’ songwriting would be heavily influenced by his love for legal philosophy as a student of Law in the University of London’s LLB program and his Legal Practice Certificate (LPC) from Manchester Metropolitan University as he strived to find the meeting ground for art, academia and lessons learned from legal practice.
Freetown Collective's early work resonated deeply with Trinidad’s underground performance spaces – from open mics to small bars and theater stages. Trinidad-born filmmaker and United States resident Damian Marcano took inspiration from Freetown’s poetry and music to create a multiple award-winning Caribbean Cult Classic film, “God Loves The Fighter.” Not only was this Lyons’ and Muwakil’s film debut as actors on screen, but it was the first significant look for Freetown’s music as ‘up-produced’ versions of their compositions were compiled as the official motion picture soundtrack for the feature film. “Good Swimma” a single from the ‘Laventille’ titled soundtrack, received moderate success as the production of James ‘Q-Major’ Quashie got the attention of two world-renowned EDM groups, Major Lazer and ShowTek, who would then do a successful remix (Believer) which peaked at number 19 on the dance charts.
Shortly after Freetown’s film collaboration with Marcano, they collaborated with award-winning documentary filmmaker Miquel Galofre on a project called ‘Art Connect,’ which focused on using art as a tool to rehabilitate ‘at risk’ and under-performing school children in one of Trinidad’s roughest neighborhoods. That opportunity led to an incidental meeting with Soca Superstar Machel Montano, a guest in the program who would then collaborate with Freetown on a remix of his single, “Represent.”
