Lt. Col. Jozette McLean is a passionate leader and the most senior woman in the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force. She is a ground-breaking pioneer and passionate advocate for military women, women’s equality, education, fitness, and public procurement reform.
Lt Col McLean enlisted in the TTDF on 6th December 1996 and in 1998, attended the prestigious Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. She was commissioned as a 2Lt in the Trinidad and Tobago Regiment on 5th June 1998 and her military career spans twenty-four years of total service. She has attended several military schools locally, regionally and internationally. She attended junior staff school at the Caribbean Junior Staff College in Jamaica and logistics staff school at the US Army Logistics University and the UK Defence Logistics Staff School at Cranwell. She later attended senior staff college at the US Army Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth Kansas.
During her career, she has held several logistics and command appointments. Her experience includes Regiment Messing Officer, with the responsibility for feeding, procurement, storage and distribution of all rations throughout the Regiment, Logistics Officer, Logistics Branch Chief, J4, G4 and Regimental Quartermaster with responsibility to coordinate, supervise and manage the expenditure of recurrent funds allocated to the Regiment. The budget that she managed for 2007/2008 was just under TT$100,000,000.00. She was the Logistics Operations Officer in 2008 for the Fifth Summit of the Americas and the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in 2009.
She has also held several command appointments such as Officer Commanding a company and Commanding Officer of the Logistics Battalion for the last six years from 2014, with responsibility for training, employing and deploying six hundred men and women as well as capital equipment. She has chaired several committees and planned several major events for the Defence Force. She is currently the Chairman of the CDS Military Women’s Initiative whose aim is to develop policies and other interventions to achieve gender equity in national security. Lt Col Mclean also coordinated a Regiment fitness initiative in concert with Dexter Simon IFBB, in order to improve wholistic fitness and knowledge for improved TTR wellness and fitness in 2020 and beyond. She is also an instructor at the Army Learning Center, Officers and Warrant Officers Training Division, for the subjects of Military History and Logistics.
She has the privilege and honor to be the first woman to break many barriers in the TTDF. She is currently the most senior female officer in TTDF and the only female from Trinidad and Tobago to attend the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst where she was awarded the Sandhurst Portraits for writing skills. She was the first female Commanding Officer in the Regiment and the first female from Trinidad and Tobago to attend Fort Leavenworth where she won the first female international Iron Major Award for fitness.
