Glenn Hamel-Smith

As a commercial lawyer for over twenty-four years, Glenn Hamel-Smith is a Partner at M. Hamel-Smith & Co., and the Head of the Firm’s Banking & Finance Practice Group. He is admitted to practice law both in the State of Florida and in Trinidad and Tobago. His began his legal career in the International and Corporate Departments of one of the largest international law firms headquartered in Miami at the time, before returning to Trinidad to join Hamel-Smith in 2002. 

Glenn obtained his LEC from Hugh Wooding Law School and his law degree from the University of Miami School of Law as a Deans’ Honor Scholar. He also holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in International Business and Management Information Systems from Florida International University where he graduated at the top of his class as a Faculty Scholar. 

Glenn’s legal practice focuses on bank finance (including secured and unsecured lending) and regulation, project finance, mergers and acquisitions, corporate restructurings, merger control, securities advisory matters and capital markets transactions, including bond/note issues and IPOs. He is a trusted counsel and adviser to lenders, borrowers, arrangers, underwriters, brokerages, trustees and financial advisers and has been responsible for leading transactions valued at over One Billion US dollars or equivalent. He has published and/or co-published several articles on various topics including, corporate governance, securities laws, bank finance and regulations, merger control, taking security over collateral, and mergers and acquisitions. 

A former vice-president of the American Chamber of Commerce of Trinidad & Tobago (AMCHAM), Glenn currently serves as a director and as the corporate Secretary of AMCHAM. He is a former member of AMCHAM’s Transparency Accountability and Governance Committee. He is also a former Legislative Committee member where he served for over eight years, including as Chair for the last three of those years. A former director of Trinidad Cement Limited (TCL), he currently serves as the Chairman of TCL’s subsidiary, Readymix (West Indies) Limited, and also as the Chairman of ExeQtrust Limited and as a director of Island Finance Trinidad & Tobago Limited. He is married with two children.
